Shabby Chic is based on worn looking furnishing and interiors. The style is characterized by soft colors in contemporary and vintage decor, and it has a predominance of feminine accents, due to its elegance and soft touch.

What Type of Style is it?
The term “shabby chic,” coined during the ’80s in Great Britain, describes a style that evoked the type of decoration usually found in country houses. These homes usually had a lot of faded old sofas, worn-out curtains, and old paintwork.
This design style, a blend of rustic charm and baroque glamour, is made up of distressed finishes and antique ornate furniture. It is often referred to as a Bohemian movement that has become one of the trends hippies enjoyed. Additionally, the style is fashionable and young. The style embraces old and nostalgic pieces – a great fit for the current interest in upcycling and recycling. Also, the style is informal, relaxed, comfortable, warm and adaptable to any home. Sometimes the term shabby chic is used in combination with some other variants: beach cottage chic , French country and Gustavian.

Sometimes contemporary designers “intentionally ruin” a new item to achieve that antique appearance. Thus, it is important to show the wood base material and the top finishing layer to get that worn-out look. Most of the items are heavily painted with more than one layer.
To achieve the effect of “distressing” on the finishing layer of the furniture, contemporary designers use a technique called faux painting to apply a glaze effect or use sandpaper to coat on a fresh paint, until it gets old and shabby looking.

A nice chandelier is a must-have item in this design style, especially if vintage looking. They add that antique charming feeling to the room and can be installed in any space, whether it is the bathroom or any other room of the house.
Designers also use iron and glass lighting fixtures which seem to come directly from the town flea market. Moreover, cream and white colored candles add a cozy mood to a room, especially when grouped randomly together on a table. In addition, distressed wooden tables topped with antique lamps will add that ultimate glam vibe.
The style also expands to the exteriors with similar design principles like using feminine-looking accessories and worn furniture. Rose gardens are extremely popular for this type of decor, and also rose patterns are frequently used. Floral vintage patterns with pastel colors, antique pieces such as jelly cupboards and pie safes are also very popular props.

The most appreciated colors are pure white, bleached pastel, light greenish, bluish tints and pink nuances. Fabric is often discolored with tea to obtain that old fabric look. In addition, faded and bleached effects are usually part of the final result.
