Pop Art and the Independent Group
Artists of many fields in London’s art environment during the early 1950s founded The Independent Group. The main members included Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, William Turnbull, Nigel Henderson and Lawrence Alloway. Pop Art movement employed images found in mass media and popular culture with a flat imagery. Additionally, the art is a clear example of the power of film and television and its imagery.

Richard William Hamilton was an English collage artist and painter. Hamilton had an idea of the artist as an active consumer who contributed to mass culture. For Hamilton, this art style was not just a movement, but a way of life. It included a total immersion in popular culture: movies, television, magazines and music. In 1956, he finished his most famous work, “Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?”. Further, the collage is the starting point of English Pop Art.
After a trip to New York, Hamilton fused elements of photography and painting in his works. During the 1980s, he studied the opportunities coming from digital media and their effects on image perception in fine arts.

Sculptor and collage maker Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi combined surrealism with pop culture and modern machinery. Paolozzi had interests in all fields of art and used many objects and materials in his designs. “I was a Rich Man’s Plaything,” is considered the first standard-bearer of this style and the first to feature the word “pop.” Additionally, Paolozzi published the collage in 1952 as part of his innovative “Bunk!” series presentation at the Independent Group meeting in London.

Andy Warhol
Andy Warhol, whose name is actually Andrew Warhola, was an American artist, filmmaker and pioneer of the Pop Art culture that dealt with mass-produced goods. He thought of artists as impersonal figures who are nevertheless successful celebrities, businessmen, and social climbers.

Pop Art Impact on Film
“Rebel Without a Cause,” is a 1955 American film dealing with emotionally confused suburban, middle-class teenagers. Nicholas Ray filmed and directed the film. Additionally, the story of youthful defiance gives a rich vision of the world from the perspective of a suffering teen with ineffectual parents, who faces a new school environment.
