Bohemian Style, or Boho style, is a rule-breaking modern design style, which emerged in the 19th Century. “Bohemians” were unconventional and artistic people who travelled around poor European countries.

The Origins of Bohemian Style
The original term “Bohemian” refers to people who live artistic and unconventional lifestyles, such as painters, actors and writers. Sometimes they are refugees or travelers from the region of Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Additionally, this counterculture appeared in France after the French Revolution. Lots of artists plunged into poverty as a result of being deprived of the former system of patronage.

Today this style translated into Bohemian interiors, famous for elements like layered textures, vintage pieces, and natural finishes. It is also often called “Boho-Chic” or “Boho.” Moreover, the Boho-style combinines colors, objects and patterns from many areas of the world.
Decorative Materials
As it is the opposite of minimal, sleek and modern styles, Boho embraces a “more is more” philosophy. The key to use decorative materials in a Bohemian interior design is to mix and match. For example, basic and natural materials like sisal and burlap can be combined with chenille and silk. The materials should have a worn, not shiny nor new look. Designers decorate rooms with fringe, “macramé” and crochet. Curtains, pillows and throw-rugs make up for a cozy, globally-inspired ethnic space. What’s more is the signature Boho embellishments are canopies over beds and living areas.

Usually, Bohemian style furniture is not easy to find at a store. Thus, rooms tend to be filled with vintage furniture collected over time. Each piece should be special and tell a little story. Additionally, designers add to the Boho vibe with couches in saturated colors and plush chairs. Some overstuffed pillows on the floor will create a welcoming floor-seating atmosphere.
Bohemian Colors

Warm earthy colors, metallic and jewel tones are common in the design. Further, layering colors is what makes this style unique. Designers mix patterns and textures and use styles that would not necessarily go together in a conventional way. Jewel tones like ruby red, emerald green and amethyst purple are often displayed in these spaces. Additionally, deep hues in walls offer an instant luxurious feel while more daring colors like a bright blue resemble a bizarre look.
Spaces with white walls can also embrace the Bohemian style vibe with the addition of particular patterns. Pattern options could be geometric, South Western and Persian styles.
Lighting and Accessories
The lighting setup often unify Boho rooms and define a sense of calm and welcoming feel. Lanterns, candles and floor lamps replace spotlights, ceiling lights and overhead fixtures.

The natural world is central as plants improve air quality and add an energetic quality to any room. The presence of greenery offers the connection to nature and rustic life.
Family heirlooms, different handmade items, tapestries, vintage bottles, maps, and other ethnic props add to the eclectic vibe to a Bohemian room. Art, sculptures, books, pillows, make boho spaces feel cozy and inviting. The only rule is that every object in the room represents something personal about its owner.
